Country Living

May 29th, 2012

Living in the country, I'm astounded by the beauty I experience every day. The other night, Emil and I went out into a large field looking for his cows.  In the distance at the edge of the field, the tree line was visible only as a dark, tall, mass, filled with thousands of fireflies, and matched by a sky with an equal number of stars and a moon about half-full.  The fireflies seemed to sparkle like lightening as they glided through branches, grasses and trees. The air was sweet. Eventually we found the cows, as a cluster of barely detectable shadowy masses in the night. They were each laying down in tall grass, chewing their cud, or maybe just resting. Peanut, a beautiful golden Jersey, is due to give birth any day. Her belly is large and her coat is sleek. I reached my arms around her round, warm, slow breathing expanse to feel for her calf. I found a bump on her side-- what may have been a leg or a head-- and felt it slowly slide around as her baby silently shifted position. We herded Peanut, Aubergine, Lilly, Peaches, Chestnut, Luna and Stimpy (An ugly, wrinkly-eyed bottle-fed steer) toward a paddock for the evening. My legs were itching all over from the tickle and mild scratches of God only knows how many kinds of grass, brush, nettles and thorns, not to mention a growing number of bug bites and mysterious rashes. Eventually, we hopped back across a small creek and toward home.

Bad Neighbors

I forgot how badass I am, and what a concise writer.

Dear Neighbor,

Saturday night at 11:30pm I was communed around a small fire with my roommate Josh and three guests in celebration of my and my mother's birthday. My mother and 15 year old little brother had driven in from Elkhorn for the occasion. As we talked around the fire someone from the area of your house rudely disrupted us and asked us to be quiet.

Now.

Let me review the details of the scenario:

Only five people.
A Saturday night.
A mother and little brother celebrating two birthdays.
Again, on a  Saturday night.
At 11:30pm. Not 2am, 11:30pm.

There are many instances where, after rudely enforcing your own selfish and presumptive judgments on our otherwise, fully respectful, wholesome, and rare gathering would have seemed more reasonable and less utterly, soul-crushingly uptight and miserly: If it were
a week night, if it weren't a one time thing, if it were later than, say, 12:30, if were had been whoopin' an' hollerin', if there were more than a piddling 5 people. It is a sad thing to realize that we live in a society where chatting around a small campfire in the company of 4 friends to celebrate your mother's 54th birthday before midnight on a Saturday night is considered worthy of not only rude reprimand, but police involvement. Please, keep your miserable, uptight, joy-crushing intolerance to yourself.  Here are some comfortable and effective earplugs for the next time you feel so terribly disturbed on a Saturday night at 11:30pm. By all means, feel free to contact us if we are ever so terribly
disturbing at 11:30pm on a weeknight, or after, say 1am on a weekend night. My cell number is 313-478-1971.

Regards,

P.S.  If this letter was delivered by mistake and you don’t know what I’m talking about,
please accept my sincere apologies.  Hopefully, as an non-participant, you would find this
account of such a pathetically asinine, laughable situation to be amusing.

Punctuation is dead

I got the below message in response to an ad I posted on craigslist I guess punctuation is dead I thought maybe there was something wrong with his computer that didnt allow punctuation but then there is one period in there which negates that possibility. Our education system has gone to shit

"Hi it's erick again thank you for your response I was just emailing back because as I was about to write your number and your fathers number down my email went crazy and erases my messages. So if I could please get your numbers again that would be great thank you very much for you print response and for your time have a great day"

Am I too old for this?

Went to some metal (or something) show at a house on my block last night. I felt very, very old, though I doubt I was the oldest there. There was much debate over the existence of aliens, or, to be more accurate, how their form is manifested here on earth- all parties involved expressed little doubt as to whether or not their really were, in fact, aliens. There was a young gentleman there who spent the evening walking around wearing various configurations of a single shoelace. He had it wrapped around his face and under arms. Then it was on his leg. At one point, it was wrapped around a lock of hair at the top of his head for an impromptu "fountain" pony tail. I discussed my desire to bring back tube socks with Courtney while we were standing on the stairway to the bathroom. It was the only place we could find room. We were also the only ones wearing color, or, more specifically, not wearing all black. We never listened to the band. All we could hear was the bass reverberating from the basement. Neil reported that they sucked. Instead, we had fun just listening to the chatter of various conversations, and occasionally debating aliens with strangers. Courtney made some strong arguments that what one young man described as an alien encounter, was quite likely, actually a lucid dream (something that Courtney experiences quite frequently). After the party, it was Thanksgiving leftovers, for which I am thankful, and bed, for which I am thankful, and cuddling, for which I am thankful.

The crippling self doubt is getting old.

Madison, Spring, 2010

This is a corny video I made instead of going to the gym tonight. Read the video description for details. Hopefully they won't remove the audio. Madison is fantastic in springtime. I can't wait till tomorrow, it's supposed to be sunny again. Enjoy. Link to Kyla's corny Madison video.

Some clips I've taken around Madison this spring.

What I did tonight instead of going to the gym: create a corny video of clips I took over the past few days. Madison is fantastic in springtime.

The video is compiled of clips taken around madison using various recording devices. Madison is fantastic in the spring. The video is a bit corny, but, oh well... Clips are of the following: The bike path along Lake Monona, a small park by Lake Monona with the cat, "Orpheline", the street near where I live on the East side, state Street, my neighbor's cat and the funny thing it does in the window, and biking towards the capitol from the Monona Terrace. Almost all of the video was taken in April, 2010, with the Orpheline clip taken in March, 2010.

Holy shit!

The haircut, the Taiwanese, the song, the fact that he's a boy: The bizarre improbability of it all leaves me speechless. Taiwanese boy sings Whitney Houston.

Neato

Interesting...

In trying to discern whether I am a true Atheist*, merely Agnostic*, or both, I came across the concept of Christian Atheism. Who knew?

*I'm still not sure of the proper definition for what I am. Try as I might, I can't in my heart believe in God, nonetheless, I know that it's all just our best guess. Where does that leave me?

Punctualization

At 3:06am last night, I responded to a friend's email with the following succinct message:

I'm drunk now, but your lack of capitalization worries me.
-Kyla.

I had to chuckle at myself today when I read it. I'm always a stickler for that sort of thing.

Balance

I'm consistently bewildered at how long it took us to invent the bicycle. I like thinking that the amount of time it took was entirely hinged on the disbelief that we could ever balance that way.

Wah.

Hellhole Ratrace by Girls is a great song. It also pretty much explains to a T how I've been feeling these days. Sometimes I feel like I have too much longing for my own good. I want too much. I feel too much. I've always been that way, but now it's there more than ever. I'm sorry if I'm freaking folks out by being so angsty--I'll be fine. I know I will. You know I will. I always come out on top. These days, however, I'm feeling transparent. I don't feel like trying to hide how I feel or where I am emotionally. So, world, there it is.

Paranoid thought.

Sometimes I fear that my life is slipping into snippets. I just don't feel the energy I used to have to write everything out. Maybe I'm just lazy. Maybe I should start a journal. Maybe links are just easier. Probably all of the above. Maybe tomorrow I'll write something that's fleshed out. Yes. Maybe tomorrow.

Religious Data

It's strange to see such a spiritual topic broken into pie charts.
